Written in Blood
If Beth had never seen the Meadow of the Dead again, itâd be too soon.
It sat, as always, amongst a blanket of snow. The apple tree, however, remained untouched by winter. Its vibrant green leaves danced softly on its branches. Alive amidst a dead, wintery barren landscape.
Except for its face carved into the rough bark of the tree trunk. Eyes closed. Fast asleep.
Alistairâs hand slipped into hers, ushering her forward. Their footsteps crunched in the snow.
âYou hid our blades in⦠the tree?â Beth asked. The winter wind bit at her lips as they came to a stop before the mighty apple tree.
âNot exactly in it. This place holds part of the life source of magic in this land. Of the Unseelie Court. It only seems fitting to hide them here.â He paused, tilting his head. His silver-gleaming snowflake crown twinkled back at her. âPlus, I placed an enchantment around the tree so it only truly reveals itself to us.â
With a wave of his hand, their sacred blades materialized on the snowy ground. Amongst a dozen silver-glowing Unseelie pixies, no less. A few of them giggled and flew through her hair, their small wings buzzing like dragonflies.
Beth swatted them away. Little menaces. She still hadnât forgotten about the apple incident.
Alistair bent down and retrieved their weapons from the snow: his silver sword with snowflakes and jewels sparkling on its ice-blue hilt, and her dark gold dagger. Copper-etched leaves decorated the handle. It had been Cypressâs.
And looking at it made Bethâs stomach twist.
âAre you sure you want to do this?â Alistair asked. His eyes narrowed with concern, and he was a touch paler, too. As if remembering how that dagger had been plunged into Bethâs chest.
She pulled out the jar of salts and folded letter from her back pocket, giving a nod.
Sprinkle a pinch of salt over a handwritten letter and sign the recipientâs name and address in blood. Send with a whisper, and the letter will disappear to your intendedâsâ destination, the spell book had said.
Beth unfolded the letter and read it one last time.
Youâre in danger. Activate the enchantment wall. There is a rebellion heading for your court. -Elizabeth Vossen.
All she could do was hope that Tabitha believed her.
With a sprinkle of salt on the page, Beth reached for the daggerâbut Alistair pulled it away before she could grasp its handle.
âLet me be the one to spill blood,â he urged.
She nearly rolled her eyes up at him. It had to be her blood; it was her letter, after all. And she was the witch. âSince when did you get so soft, my king?â
Those icy wintry eyes darkened as he took in those words. She watched his pupils expand, and a devilish smile formed on his mouth. âSay that again, dear Elizabeth.â
She took a step closer and lowered her voice with ribbons of seduction: âMy king.â
Alistair shivered in what looked like pleasure, and thatâs when Beth used his distraction to her advantage. She swiped the dagger from his hand and sliced her finger in a clean sweep.
